Autists & their Animals is an exploration of autistic peoples’ relationships with animals as pets, assistance animals or special interests. This is our physical copy, the cover is full-colour pearlescent paper, that shimmers in the light and the inside pages are risograph printed, a beautiful vintage process which features bright spot colours on recycled uncoated paper. Each zine has been lovingly hand risograph printed, collated and bound in house at our studios by an all-autistic team! As such, each issue may have slight deviation.
This zine celebrates the companionship animals give us when communicating with other people can be difficult or alienating; the mental well-being benefits of forming relationships with animals, and as tactile sensory seekers, often with unique perspectives - from sensitive smell to acute hearing, autistic people’s unique ability to relate to animals.
Autistic people often have especially strong bonds with family dogs and all kinds of other pets. Yet not all autistic people have access to forming their own relationship with a pet, and animals often feature as special interests instead.
Studies show that autists greatly benefit psychologically from the companionship of an animal. Sensory benefits include the touch of fur or scales, the weight of an animal on one’s lap, and the bidirectional calming interaction of petting an animal.
